Adding a YouTube Video to Joomla 1.6

Document Meta

  • Level: Beginner

  • Version: Joomla 1.6-1.7

Adding videos such as embedded YouTube or Vimeo videos take a few steps in Joomla 1.6 to get right. There are new settings in Joomla 1.6 that have to be tweaked in order to get the videos working. These new settings help improve the output of the code from the WYSIWYG Editors as well as protecting your website from malicious code.

Here is the overview from the backed of Joomla about text filters.

"These are the text filters that will be applied to articles submitted by users in the selected groups.
These filtering options give more control over the HTML your content providers submit. You can be as strict or as liberal as you require to suit your site needs. The filtering is opt-in and the default settings provide good protection against markup commonly associated with Web site attacks."

This is on top of the filters and malicious code strippers that are found in the Editors.

Currently, at the time of this article, there are no other content editors available for Joomla 1.6 nor are there any plugins such as JoomlaWorks AllVideos plug-in that will allow for the easy embedding of videos.

So, at this point in time, to embed YouTube videos or the like you have to follow these steps.

Turning Off Your WYSIWYG Editor In Global Configuration

Navigate via the administration menu to Site -> Global Configuration and select the Site sub menu.

Switch your editor to "No Editor" in the Site Settings area.

Modifying the Article Manager Options

You should be now able to embed your YouTube code into Joomla 1.6.

After which you may want to switch back to the default editor, TinyMCE for further editing on your website.
