A great feature of Joomla is the Module Manager, which allows you to insert various functions into your website. Perhaps you want to include a search bar, or a latest news updates box, or a menu contained within your websites side bar. The module manager is where all this action begins.

Joomla already has a whole lot of great default modules you can begin using straight away, and there are also literally thousands of other modules and plugins you can download from the Joomla Extensions Directory that have been submitted by many Joomla users around the world.

 The Module Manager can be access from Joomla's control panel by clicking the Module Manager Icon:



It can also be accessed from the EXTENSIONS tab in the top menu bar:



From here you will be taken to the module manager. Let's run through a few of the important features of this screen:


1. Towards the top of the module manager are a row of icons. It is here that you can insert 'new' modules into your site, 'edit' or alter the published status of existing modules. Let's look at these icons in greater detail. (If you are already familiar with these icons, you can jump straight to step 2, where we explore the module managers filtering options.

Allows you to insert new modules into your website.

After selecting a module from the list, clicking the EDIT button will open up the parameters for that specific module, and allow you to alter th emodules behaviour.

First create the module, then selct it from the list of modules and click DUPLICATE. The function will make an exact replicate of an existing module.

After selecting an existing module from the list, clicking either of these two buttons alters the published status of a module. Perhaps you want to disable a particular module from your website for a period of time, but do not wish to delete the module. This is the feature that will allow you to do this.

If you find that you are locked out of a particular module, in most cases this is because another user or administrator of the website is currently already editing that module. In this scenario click CHECK IN to allow multiple users into that module.

Modules that are no longer required can be discarded into the trash can.

Controls the various levels of access to the module manager for specific levels of users.

Brings up a window where further information can be accessed about the media manger.


2. The filter allows you to find specific modules from the list of modules. It can be filtered using keywords, or by selecting paramenters from the pull down menus.

3. The list of modules also displays information about the published status of each module, the position the module is locked in to, and the order that the module appears within that position.

When creating a new article, Access to an article can be specified using the Article Permissions settings. These setting allow users to be able to edit or even delete articles if they have the authorised access.

First select a profile from the menu on the left, and define the access level from the form on the right. The actions corrospomd with the settings you choose from the drop down menu.

When creating a new article, there are many parameters that can be set to display specific information and layouts for your article.

In this tutorial we will explore the publishing options, displayed on the right hand side of the screen.




Publishing Options

1. Created by Allows you to select an author for the article

2. Created by alias allows you to use an alternate name, rather than the account name you use to login.

3. Created allows you to time stamp your article. Select the date by clicking on the small calender icon next to this field.

4. Start publishing allows you to select a date to commence the publication status of the article.

5. Finish publishing allows you to select a date to terminate the publication status of the article.

6. Modified details the date of which the article was previously modified.

7. Revision details how many times the article has been modified.

8. Hits details how many times the article has been viewed on the website.



Article options

The pulldown box for each parameter give you an option to toggle the parameter on or off, or use the global settings (which can be modified from the Article Manager screen).

1. Show title allows you to toggle the display of the articles title.

2. Linked title allows you to have the artilce title link to the article itsellf. This is commonly used in a blog layout, where many articles are listed on a single page.

3. Show intro text will display any text written before the placement of the "Read More" divider.

4. Show Category allows you to display from what category the article is assigned to.

5. Link Category allows you to make the category title link to a list of articles contained within that category.

6. Show Parent displays the parent category that the article is assigned to.

7. Link Parent makes the article click through to the parent category.

8. Show Author will display the authors name at the top of the article.

9. Link Author will link through to a list of other articles written by that author when the user clicks the authors name.

10. Show Create Date displays the date that the article has been time stamped for.

11. Show Modify Date displays the date the article was last modified on

12. Show publish date displays the date the article was originally published

13. Show Navigation displays navigation buttons to the "previous" and "next" article.

14. Show Icons toggles the display of the the Print / Email icons.

15. Show Print Icon toggles the display of this icon.

16. Show Email Icon toggles the displa y of this icon.

17. Show Voting toggles the displays the Rating form. Viewers can rate the article by selecting a score from the radio buttons.

18. Show Hits displays the number of times the article has been opened.

19. Show Unauthorised Links will display links to articles based on the users authorised access.

20. Read More Text allows the author to customise the "read more" text that appears when a read more divider is placed within the article.

21. Alternative Layout allows the author to assign the article to a custom layouts.



Meta Options

These options are used to determine your ranking in search engince results. It's recommended (but not essential) that you give consideration to your meta options.

1. Meta Description is a unique description of the article, written within 160 characters. This is most commonly used as the description displayed in Google search reults.

2. Keywords should be kept to a minimum and be relelvent to the articles content. Keywords should also be seperated with a comma.

3. Robots allows you to specify instructions to search engines. The options are as follows:

Index, Follow
Search engines should not include this page in their search results, and follow through all links contained within the page.

No index, Follow
Search engines should not include this page in their search results, but should follow through all links contained within the page.

Index. No follow
Search engines should index the page in their search results, but should disregard any links links contained within the page.

No index, No follow

4. Author is the name specified to be used within search results.

5. Content Rights Describe what rights others have to use this content, and by what rights the content is protected.

6. External Refernce can be used to retrieve the article. For instance, Create a test article with the external reference "xxxx". On the front-end, enter the URL: index.php?option=com_content&task=findkey&keyref=xxxx and your article should be displayed

Articles make up the content of your website, and can consist of text, images and other media. A page on your website may contain one article or multiple articles.



To create a new Article, click Content from the top menu, and then select Article Manager from the drop down menu, and follow the menu through to Add New Article.


The following page that appears allows you to type in your new article. Make sure to assign your article to a Category, using the drop down menu button. Click Save when you have finished.


On the right hand side of this page there are a number of Publishing Options that can be modified to customise the article even further.

Images and documents can be inserted into your joomla articles and items. It is very easy to upload them from your computer and store them on your website server.

A link to an image or document (hyperlink) may be inserted into an Item as follows:

  1. Open the Item you wish to add an image or document link to:
    K2 > Items > selected Item
  2. Locate and highlight the text or image you wish to use as the link.
  3. Select the Insert/edit link button on the JC Editor.

  4. Select the Browse button and double-click to open existing folder or create new folder by selecting add new folder button to place image or document into.

  5. Select the Upload button and Add to browse for your image or document.

  6. Select your image or document then click Upload then Cancel.

  7. The image or document link will now be displayed in the Item text.


* Clicking the Cancel button closes the screen without inserting a link.

Adding content to an K2 item is as easy as copying and pasting text.

To add content to an Item in Joomla!follow these steps:

  1. Create a new Item or open an existing Item
  2. Select: Paste as Plain Text in the JC Editor
  3. Paste text and Select Insert

  4. Stylise text accordingly using JC Editor
  5. Select Apply to preview or Save

* Clicking the Cancel button closes the screen without inserting the text.
