DocMan Overview

About DOCMan for Joomla

DOCMan is one of the best document management solutions available for Joomla. It allows controlled downloading and uploading of documents into Joomla.

Unlike the regular media and file manager in Joomla, DOCMan allows for permission control and restricted access, front end file submissions, and meta information about the documents all of which can be controlled from an admin interface.

Administrators can organise documents within DOCMan in to nested categories as well and control various levels of security including anti leech systems.

There are several steps that you must take in order to upload and manage content on the website.

  1. Create categories for documents to exist in
  2. Upload the corresponding file
  3. Create a virtual document of the file

Downloading and Installing DOCMan

DOCMan is a commercial extensions and a copy of DOCMan can be obtained via the Joomla Extensions Directory:

Extra fields can be used to include extra data into your items. For instance, if you were writing regular items about different models of sports cars, you may want to include extra text fields that refer to the various features of the car: Kind of motor, top speed, how many seats, etc.

    Joomla 1.6 Page Redirects

A new handy component and feature of Joomla 1.6 is the ability to easily do page redirects. This really comes in handy when there are 404 errors on your website and you need to redirect the traffic to the correct addresses.

The new redirect module will record any broken links or incorrect URL's typed in from a user, making it extremely easy for you to create an alternate working link (and thus keeping your website reader at your website, and not at an error page).

At times you may wish to create a link to another article from inside the article you are currently creating.

    Featuring An Article

Traditionally in Joomla, featured articles have been articles that appear on the front page of your website. In Joomla 1.6, front page articles have been re-named Featured Articles. This makes much more sense because you may not always want to feature particular articles on the front page. This method gives you much more control on how and where you may feature particular articles.
